The fig orchard in Montalcino
An ancient heritage to preserve
At the heart of the estate lies one of Tuscany’s most significant plantations of ancient figs. Over two hundred trees representing thirty-two different varieties grow together on a single hectare of land, creating a plantation that represents a precious genetic and agricultural heritage.
The decision to grow figs stems from a desire to preserve ancient varieties that were at risk of disappearing and to restore the value of a fruit deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture. Each variety has its own unique characteristics: their colors, aromas, textures, and ripening periods vary, resulting in a succession of harvests from June through October.
Farming with Respect for Nature
Heirloom varieties are naturally more resilient and allow us to grow crops without resorting to any pesticides.
Every decision follows the rhythm of nature. The harvest is done entirely by hand and begins at dawn, when the fruit is at its freshest. Each fig is picked one by one, still attached to its stem, preserving its integrity and natural delicacy.
It is a labor of patience that requires time, experience, and attention, but it allows you to harvest each fruit at the moment it is perfectly ripe.
A treat to be enjoyed fresh from the harvest
The fig is one of nature’s most delicate fruits. That’s why it’s rare to be able to enjoy it truly fresh, just a few hours after it’s been picked.
During the season, our figs are served to guests at the estate; they take center stage at tastings and are selected by restaurants, boutique hotels, and chefs seeking ingredients that showcase the region through flavor.
Each variety offers different flavors and textures: some surprise with their sweetness, while others stand out for their aromatic notes or the unique texture of their flesh.
An Ancient Fruit
The fig has been part of Mediterranean history for thousands of years. Considered a sacred fruit in ancient Greece and mentioned as early as Homer’s time, it was also cultivated and prized by the ancient Romans, who described its varieties and cultivation techniques.
It has always been a symbol of fertility, abundance, and hospitality, and to this day it remains one of the most prized fruits of the Mediterranean agricultural tradition.
Often considered a high-calorie fruit, fresh figs contain about 45 kcal per 100 grams—less than many people realize and less than other commonly eaten fruits, such as bananas.
It is naturally rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—particularly calcium, potassium, and magnesium—and is valued for its high nutritional value.
Precisely because it is so delicate, it is difficult to store, and it is often eaten after it has already lost some of its qualities. Enjoy it as soon as Harvesting means discovering its true fragrance, texture, and full aromatic richness.
Our Favorite Pairings
Each variety has its own distinct character and can be paired with both sweet and savory dishes.
Among our favorite pairings:
- bread, Sangiolele extra virgin olive oil, and salt crystals;
- prosciutto and red or yellow figs;
- fresh pecorino cheese and golden figs;
- anchovies, butter and orange figs;
- traditional Tuscan cured meats;
- walnuts and honey.
Of course, they can also be enjoyed on their own, fresh from the tree, or turned into our compotes to preserve their flavor all year round.
Tastings
From August 20 to September 30, every evening, when the light begins to change.
“Un Amor di Fico” is an invitation to discover one of the most unique places in Sangiolele: our orchard of heirloom fig trees.
The tour begins with a walk through the trees, during which we share the story of our orchard, the different varieties, and the work that goes into tending them each year. It’s a journey that offers insight into a little-known agricultural heritage that is deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture.
Guests are then invited to pick the figs they’d like to taste directly from the tree, choosing from the varieties that are ripe at that time. The figs can be enjoyed in the shade of the fig grove or taken home at the end of the visit.
The tasting continues with a selection of local specialties, our extra virgin olive oil, and the estate’s wine, paired with freshly picked figs. A simple and convivial experience, designed to highlight the flavors of the season and tell the story of Sangiolele through its produce.
